Sisters

We are an international group of Catholic women who share a life commitment to Jesus Christ, the Incarnate God. In the spirit of Frances Taylor, our Foundress we commit ourselves to actively listening to the Gospel in the realities of our time. We combine prayer and community life, which supports our response and our service with the poor and vulnerable.

There are many facets to the work of the SMG Sisters and the wider “family” which embraces the Associates and Staff who work with us. The underpinning purpose of our existence is to be of service to people in need and play our part in the development of social justice.

The Sisters, who make up the Congregation of the Poor Servants of the Mother of God (often referred to as SMGs), take specific lifelong vows and live together in community, The Associates are lay people from all walks of life who share the same passionate love for Jesus Christ, who wish to be associated with the spirit and charism of the Congregation but who do not take vows and do not live in community with the Sisters.

Since the foundation of the Congregation in 1869 the many works originally started by the Sisters have grown and changed. Over the years the number of lay staff employed by the Sisters to continue their work has also grown.  Our many staff are a valued part of the SMG family and through their skills and experience contribute to our mission and help to deliver our services to those in need.  They are helped by specialist support groups who give their time and expertise in helping us through the many and varied aspects of carrying out our work.

The individuals we serve are also embraced as members of our extended family.  They bring with them the challenges that inspire our work and the joys of achieving progress in self development and independence.  Whatever our roles within the family structure, and regardless of our religious or other beliefs, we are inspired by the vision of Frances Taylor, the Foundress of the Poor Servants of the Mother God. In particular, the values she espoused: Care and respect for the individual. We invite you to find out more about our history, the work we do and where we do it as well as the purpose and values that inspire us by exploring the rest of our website.

Associates

The SMG Associate Movement offers an opportunity for women and men, who are inspired by the same spirit as Frances Taylor, to share that inspiration with one another. To deepen it by developing their understanding and knowledge of Frances Taylor by allowing her spirit to permeate their lives at home, at work and in their churches. It is a chance to make a difference wherever you are and in whatever you are doing.

Associates meet together, usually monthly to share, reflect, celebrate liturgies and pray with their local SMG community. We share in the SMG ministries and offer mutual support, friendship and fellowship. Sisters support and inspire us in our spiritual growth. Associates are encouraged to live gospel values in daily life. Associates are carriers of the Charism of the Congregation.

Associates do not make a vowed commitment to the Congregation nor do they share responsibility for its internal life and government.

Associate Membership is open to anyone: family, staff, colleagues, members of the local church. All are welcome to become Associates, participating at the level they find appropriate. Associate groups are linked to a local SMG community.

Staff

True to the inspiration of Frances Taylor, much of the expansion of the work of the Poor Servants of the Mother of God during the 20th century was in response to requests for support and assistance from others.
Now, our members of staff worldwide are in excess of 1200. They include many hundreds of people engaged in nursing, teaching, care, domestic, catering, maintenance and office roles, working at a range of locations where we have health and social care, educational other services.

The support and encouragement of the Sisters nurtures the commitment and potential of local people, enabling them to continue to fulfil the vision and charism of the Foundress Frances Taylor/Mother Magdalen in many new and different fields. To find out more about our activities and employment
